The Light Before Christmas (2007)
Boring but Okay
Two children go to give a Christmas gift from their mother to the Candleman. He tells them the story of the Night Before Christmas, and then makes reference to the "giver of all good gifts," showing a nativity scene on a table, and talks about how Christmas is about giving. Overall, I didn't find anything objectionable about it, but it was just boring. There are so many other, better Christmas options. If you're curious, it's an okay one-time watch. Some people apparently love it, based on other reviews. But I wouldn't set your expectations too high.
Steel Magnolias (2012)
Pale Imitation
I wanted to like this remake, but I just couldn't. Maybe if I'd never seen the original, I'd think more highly of it. But in the original, the relationships between the characters felt so strong it was almost something physical you could see and touch, and Sally Field's performance especially was extraordinary. This version felt very rote by comparison. They went through the same motions but the dance had no fire. I'm sorry, it's just not worth it. Stick with the original. Watching the original made me laugh and cry. Watching this version made me wince and feel bored.
It's Christmas (2007)
Waste of time
It's difficult to think of one aspect of this movie that isn't terrible: the acting, the lighting, the dialogue, the characters, the costumes, the plot. It isn't even terrible in an "enjoyable to laugh at" way, like some old cheesy movies; it's just boring and painful to watch. Pick any other Christmas movie; you're not missing out by skipping this one.
Nutcracker! (2003)
Well, it's...different
If you're wanting to see the actual Nutcracker story, this version will disappoint you. You're better off seeing, for example, the beautiful version with family appeal starring Macaulay Culkin, or the version with adult appeal starring Mikhail Baryshnikov. You should see the Matthew Bourne version only if you're in the mood for some "cheesiness." Because this particular story is tongue-in- cheek, over-the-top, melodramatic, a satire, a parody, a spoof, whatever term you want to use, but one thing it is not is the Nutcracker as most people know it. It is unusual, which can be interesting.
It contains elements that parents may find unsuitable for children's viewing. If you find crassness and vulgarity more distasteful than humorous, you will probably want to skip this. If you glance through the photos on IMDb, that should give you enough of an indication of what it's like to tell whether or not you want to try it for yourself. Or you could just think about the fact that Princess Sugar feeds the Nutcracker a marshmallow from her bra
